MiX.12FX vs. Involight X-2: odd one out in the basket

Every channel has AUX send, so you can throw together a monitor mix too.
Frequency response: 20 Hz – 120 kHz. Signal-to-noise ratio: <-100 dBr (A-weighted). Distortion: <0.01%. These are numbers that can be taken seriously in a compact mixer. It supplies phantom power (+48V), so you can safely connect condenser mics.
Involight X-2 – fog control from the end of a cable
The Involight X-2 remote is a completely different animal. This is a fog machine remote controller that you mount at the end of a cable, and from there you trigger the fog when and how you need it. Works for burst release (one press = one burst of fog) and continuous mode too – depends on whether you want to build a big fog cloud or just maintain a constant haze.
The point isn’t complexity, but simplicity: no need to run over to the fog machine, instead you control it from where you can see the stage, the dancers, the band. Designed for Involight fog machines, easy to connect, easy to use.
What’s each one good for?
The MiX.12FX is your guy if you’re working in a smaller studio, doing live sound reinforcement, or heading to a venue where you need to bring a compact but capable mixer. The fact that it has built-in DSP effects and compressor means less gear to haul, you’re ready faster, and you can still deliver professional sound. 12 channels is enough for a smaller band, an acoustic set, a conference, a club night.
The Involight X-2 remote is what you need when you have a fog machine and don’t want to stand next to it all night. For stage productions where fog is dramaturgy – band enters, fog rolls; chorus hits, fog; light beam, fog. Or if you want constant haze but the machine is somewhere in the back and you’re keeping the controller at the mixing console.
What they have in common: control
The interesting thing is that although we’re talking about two completely different categories, both products solve the same problem: you decide what happens, and when. With the MiX.12FX you shape the sonic picture – EQ, effects, compressor, AUX mix –, with the Involight X-2 you control the visual atmosphere. Neither does everything, but what it does, it does exactly when you say so.

Well, obviously it’s not an „either-or” question. If you have a fog machine and want to control it professionally, then the Involight X-2 remote is like your right hand – indispensable.
